Langkawi Islands – The gem of Malaysia!
Many times when people think of Malaysia, they over look the amazing archipelago of islands known as Langkawi. But lately more and more tourists have been travelling to this lesser-known paradise, proving that in a world of overcrowded resorts, there are still tropical wonderlands just waiting to be found. Islands tours of this collection of 100 islands are becoming more sought after, giving a perfect opportunity to experience the gem of Malaysia for yourself.
While the availability of these tours depend largely on the weather (tours do not operate during the monsoon season of July – mid-September), the rest of the year offers bright, warm weather, that are sure to make your vacation one to remember. There are many of these tours to choose from, so I have compiled a list of some of my favourites.
Pulau Rebak: A private island owned by the Rebak Marina, this hotel and resort was built while still retaining the beauty and ambiance of the environment. They offer eco-friendly activities all over the island, including marine park tours, and, a tourist favourite, day trips into the jungle.
Pulau Tuba: This is the perfect place to truly get away from it all. Home to small group of traditional fishermen, seekers of a true cultural experience will love Pulau Tuba. There is an actual home stay program where you can be invited to stay in the fishermen's homes, giving a unique look into the way of life of the people. There is also a resort located on the island, as well as a large number of activities, like bird-watching and jungle-tracking. A boat to the island only costs RM30 ($4.36 US) for a one-way trip.
Pulau Dayang Bunting: With a name that translates into the 'Isle of the Pregnant Maiden', you know you can expect great things. Palau Dayang Bunting is the second largest of the islands, and is covered in rich rain forests. There is a large lake where legend tells of magical powers, allowing barren women who take a dip in its pools to gain the gift of fertility, hence the name. And if you like adventure, there is a cave called the Gua Langsir, home of thousands of bats within its darkness. Only day trips are available, but the boat ride from Kuah is only 15 minutes long, so it makes a fantastic destination for an outing.
Pulau Singa Besar: While the name translates into 'Big Lion', if you are looking for these massive king's of the jungle, you will be disappointed. However, if you are interested in an island filled with deer, lizards, exotic birds, and monkeys, you will have the time of your life. There are also amazing rock formations that are definitely worth a look (and a climb!). There are camp grounds available, as well as the ability to hire a guide for the day who will take you through the island and teach you about the local plant life and sights of the island.
Pulau Bumbon: A day trip to Pulau Bumbon is like booking a day on your very own secluded paradise. With beautiful sandy beaches and the crisp ocean air, this little island 10 minutes off of the Kuah jetty is a great place to get away from others and spend some time in the peace and quiet of nature.
Langkawi has become one of the world's fastest growing tourist attractions. Book your vacation today, and come find out why these Malaysian islands are becoming one of Asia's hottest spots.
